So what does everyone out there think the voice chat feature is going to do to the world of MMO's? I mean I have played a few different ones and I know there are a lot of people out there who use teamspeak programs to communicate w/ thier companions, but having it so you can talk to anyone you team with...
I think the 1st major change is that finding teams that work well together will be eaiser to find. It will be a lot easier to explain the tatics you are wanting easier so the teams will be better prepaired for what their teammates are planning.
I also think that it may cause some parents not to want their children playing the game. You can filter text, but it will be a lot harder to keep profanity away from small ears that shouldn't hear it.
So what is your opinion?

I really don't know what to make of it, on the one hand it'll make this MMO even more unique than its already promising to be, but on the other, if I'm required to buy whatever newfangled doo-dads I need for teamspeak, i may have to look else where unless my financial situation improves.
Also, like you said it may hurt the games population with some people not wanting to play to avoid profanity etc.
Like I say, I'm not too sure whether this will be a positive or negative aspect to the game, especially since I've never encountered teamspeak before...

If it makes you feel any better my headset (mic and speakers) was only $10, so I don't think it will put a giant dent in your pocket.

Voice Chat should always be optional, as well as the option of muting said chat.
Every time I play a game with voice chat, there is always someone abusing it by playing music or name calling or they just have a bad connection and nothing but white noise.
I'm certain it will be well balanced for gameplay, from what I have read so far they are trying more then a few new ideas in this game.
But hopefully the option to mute and/or play without voice will be available, if not it will limit the playability of the game and that will hurt it's chances of surviving flourishing and making a profit.
There are more then a few reasons why it should be optional, from parental control to not waking up your family when you play.
Perhaps this will change my perception of voice chat and perhaps not, but as long as I have the option to mute it will be fine.
Read arena chat on CoH/CoV now imagine that then combine it with a 24 hour open mike night at a Karaoke bar and typical myspace.com chat.
>_<
That's what my recent experiences with voice chat have been like...
I hope the voice in TR can/will change my mind about ingame voice communication.

I think its a great idea...especially for games that featuring raiding. An idea that WoW missed out on, how many guilds rely on Vent or Teamspeak to run raids, either it cost money or its a crappy connection.
LotRO has voice chat system for teaming/raid situations only. I have yet to try it but from what most users are statings its very nice.
But all in all, I think its a great idea for games to offer a free, choice driven option of Voice Chat abilities.

Hellgate: London's going to have integrated voice chat too. I wouldn't be surprised if it became a standard kind of feature for the next generation of MMO's. As for the headset, I just use my $30 PS2 USB headset.
