Yes. The game was Ultima Online and Richard Garriot was playing his character Lord British when a thief used a spell to kill him while he was not invincible.

Sweet glad this conversation was started and thanks for the links. I think Richard Garriot is a really fascinating individual and loved so much of the work from Origin his first big game company. It will be very interesting to see how this one pans out.
